Mumbai: Owing to the poor offtake by the construction and automobile sectors, India’s steel consumption registered a flat index for the first six months of the current fiscal. According to the official data released by the Ministry of Steel, the index showed just 0.8% year-on-year growth.
The data disclosed by the Joint Plant Committee, an arm under the Steel Ministry indicates the consumption of finished steel during the April-September period of the current fiscal at 36.58 million tonnes. Besides, the imports of steel during the April-September period also dropped down by 25.2% to 2.9 million tonnes as against 3.9 million tonnes recorded in the corresponding period a year ago.
The total steel production on the other hand posted a 6.2% rise to 40.3 MT during the April-September period against 38 MT during the same period a year ago, outlined the JPC data. The World Steel Association has recently reduced its projection for the demand growth towards the steel segment to 3.4% from the earlier forecast of 5.9% for the current financial year.
