We need to focus on ‘Green Steel’ production: Steel Minister

Beni Prasad VermaNew Delhi: Environment friendly steel production is a big part of the philosophy of Indian steel manufacturers and we need to take this forward by focusing on ‘Green Steel’ production, urges Union Steel Minister, Beni Prasad Verma. The minister was speaking on the sidelines of the 51st National Metallurgist Day celebrations organized by Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) in Varanasi.

The occasion was also graced by G. Mohan Kumar, Secretary, Ministry of Steel, C.S. Verma, Chairman, SAIL, Prof. K Chattopadhyay, President of IIM, Prof Sastry, Chairman Organising Committee, and officials of IIM.

Appreciating the contributions of the metallurgists, Minister added, “Metallurgists have a big role to play in the development of the nation. Their contributions are even more relevant now, when the nation is going through a growth phase.”

The Minister threw light on the success achieved by the Indian steel and metal industry. He also briefed the masses on the steps which the government plans to take for the healthy growth of the sector. one such step in this direction is the finalization of New National Steel Policy.

“We are in the final stages of finalization of New National Steel Policy to increase the country’s steel capacity to 300 million tons per annum. A Roadmap on R&D and Technology for the industry has also been released,” he added.

During the celebration, the Minister felicitated Saibal Kant Gupta, Director JSW Steel Ltd with the Lifetime Achievement Award, Ashok Kumar, Chief Raw Material and Iron Making Technology Group, Tata Steel Ltd with the National Metallurgist (Industry) Award and Dr. G Sundarajan with the National Metallurgist (Research & Academia) Award.

Besides, the minister also bestowed awards like Metallurgist of the Year, Young Metallurgist of the Year.
